It takes patterns of electro-chemical impulses and identifies the impulses by matching the pattern of electro-chemical signatures that matches the pattern to a file from previous signatures. The body just reverberates and feeds back sensory information that results from the choices that your mind makes. The mind is what determines choice. The brain does not choose. Even when the brain is exposed by a doctor and he pokes and prods certain areas of the exposed brain which might be an indicator to force the leg to raise or the eye to shut, etc., it is still the “chooser” of the doctor as to where to poke the exposed brain in order to make the body react.

We know that the body does not make choices by the actions that the body does do -- not through the actions that the body does not do. The affirmative has the burden of proof here. However, the lack of experience of negatives does not negate that the body does make choices, but it just has not proven that it does make choices. The mind makes the choice for the entire body as a unit. My mind is not thinking about the digestive tract or any specific area to control. There are portions of my body that are making decisions for the body without the mind thinking about it. The mind is controlling the body’s choice or determining the opportunities for the body. The mind is still choosing what to do with the body determining what to do. The mind governs the whole body. The body makes bazillions of choices in individual compartmentalized areas (digests, kills viruses, beats the heart, absorbs oxygen, etc.) but not about the whole body. We also have many things that are not part of the body that make individual choices. There are some bacteria that are not our bacteria, but our body allows it to stay there in order to break down cellular material that can replenish a component in the body. There are enzymes of flora or fauna of other people, animals, or plants that we are lacking. Different species can share the same bacterial fungi and it all gets dissipated into the environment. It gets absorbed into the dirt that is absorbed into the plants and we eat the plants or eat the animals that eat the plants.

The brain is a mechanism with two hemispheres and it evaluates one side or another to identify, interpret, and catalog. Everything is identified basically as a pattern of “comfortable” or “uncomfortable”, A or B, negative or positive, etc. It records patterns and it eventually assigns a definition – a label. The mind CHOOSES to adopt the patterns or to not adopt the patterns it receives. Positive patterns represent moreness – negative patterns represent “less than moreness”. Consistent interpretations validate the choice that you made with your mind as what you know it. It is through consistently correlated inputs that create a consensus of the inputs. That is how you know what you know. Your interpretation can then be qualified with additional mass consensus. When your consistent consensus agrees with the consistent consensus of others, the more it validates your own consistent consensus and the more “sure” that the knowledge is actual – therefore, a form of reality (e.g. We can all agree if it’s day or night or if it’s 4:00 pm. etc.).

The mind is created to provide moreness – it’s attracted to moreness. The purpose of the mind is to acquire moreness of association. The choices that we make about the previous consensus or about the consensus of others’ experiences are reverberated by our bodies. The reverberation from our bodies provides indication, which provides information as to whether the information is comfortable (enjoyable) or uncomfortable (unpleasant). We will either deny the continuation of the experience; or will continue to measure, experiment, and evaluate the experience until our bodies are comfortable. Can we make any situation be comfortable? The only proof that has been found is that the mind can change its determination and adopt the uncomfortable experience as “comfortable” so it can change proclivity and determine to adopt the uncomfortable as if it were “comfortable”. That is not the same as body “BE”-ing comfortable. We know that the body is comfortable when the muscles twist in a positive direction. If the muscles receive a negative thought pattern from the brain, then the muscles twist in a negative pattern.

The brain is like the hardware. The body cannot change a pattern it has received. It just reacts to what is given. The mind is like the software and can be reprogrammed (the brain can be damaged and perception can be changed through the damage). You have the sensory reception system and the central nervous system. They can both send signals to the brain. Your perception (the signal to the brain) is different than your conception (how you conceive it). You can conceive it differently or the same – it depends on how you have programmed yourself or how you were programmed by others. When you perceive something that the brain has organized to perceive as a negative pattern, the mind can look at what the brain perceives. Now your mind can override what the brain has perceived. All of our brains perceive sensory inputs or sensory nervous system feedbacks; it is our minds that get programmed. If the biofeedback is negative, the brain will interpret it as uncomfortable, but the mind can accept it as comfortable. The opposite can also occur – the body can totally be comfortable, but the mind won’t accept the comfortability. It rejects the comfort and thinks that the comfortability of the body is the acceptance of the rejection in the mind. The body will know with enough experiences and patterns as to whether it is uncomfortable or comfortable and then the body will have a choice by the mind.

If I was born in a small yard of feces and all I did was live in feces and grew up in feces and slept in feces and ate around the feces, and this was all that I knew; then if someone took me out of that yard and placed me in a field of flowers, my body would be comfortable but my mind might feel very uncomfortable. BUT with further measuring (complete testing), experience and willingness to stay within the flowers to evaluate the experience, the average regular body (that has not been mutated by the experience of growing up in feces), will eventually “be” comfortable with the flowers as long as the mind allows it to be.

Choices: Fearful and Fearless
Many people test, but they don’t complete the measurement. They haven’t measured against what they already know. Measuring fully takes asking questions and comparatively analyzing the patterns against other measurements. Unbiased testing or the true willingness to experiment requires fearlessness – to be without fear. Fear of loss (fear of losing who they are or what they think they are) will make people NOT re-program or re-indoctrinate themselves. The very idea of thinking about re-programming or re-indoctrinating oneself could be considered a useless idea. Others might think it’s ludicrous or stupid (more fear-based projections). Why would anyone take effort and energy to reprogram? It sounds like too much work for some (more fear of loss).

A fearless person chooses to work with, discover, observe, and see the Truth as it is. Truth is things measured that “have been” (past), “is now” (present), and “will be” (future). Truth must have all three of these components. It is not Truth if it lacks one of these virtues. How does one know what “will be”? The past shows the future. We examine the past (which was other’s present and other’s future). People can say that truth is in the eye of the beholder, or that truth is perceptional – and again, all these styles of statements require not having to work. It is programming from fear of loss (fear of being wrong, fear of working too hard, fear of losing how I want to do things, fear of how I want to be perceived, etc.). There are absolute truths and universal laws.

Measuring and experimenting is the basis of intelligence and growth. People are given a certain set of information and patterns when growing up. Take for example about the pattern of growing up in a yard of feces: If I am a fearless person that grew up in feces and then I become introduced to flowers and although I might be uncomfortable with the flowers at first, I will choose to stay in the flowers – observing, crushing, tasting, smelling, examining, and maybe even looking for more different type of flowers that will eventually lead me to examine bigger plant life. The body will then have enough experiences and patterns for it to know as to whether it is truly uncomfortable or comfortable and then the body will have a choice. The regular average body that has not mutated (from the living with feces) will truly be comfortable with the flower and the muscles will twist in a positive direction with further measuring.

But a fearful (full of fear) person will evaluate what is “true” (comfortable) and then they will evaluate their truth (comfort-ability) as the whole truth (most comfortable). Since they are not willing to re-program or re-indoctrinate themselves with experiences and tests because of the fear of losing “whom they feel that they are”, this person will remain where they are. The person arrives at a premature solution – approaching it from prejudice and bias. This type of choosing could also allow them the opportunity to deny what could exist or to deny what is true. In other words, if I am a fearful person that grew up in feces and then I become immersed in flowers and I am immediately uncomfortable with the flowers – the smell, the colors, the sizes and shapes of the flowers, after having lived all my life in a yard of feces, I will choose to go back to the yard of feces for fear of losing who I think I am so I am no longer uncomfortable. My fear of loss comes from the inability to compare the sensory inputs creating the conflict or the confusion – the lack of ability to measure the comparison. So I choose to believe my partial “truth” as my whole truth …that feces is what makes me comfortable; that the yard that I was raised in is the best solution to my uncomfortable issue with the flowers. I might also go as far as to say very adamantly that ‘ALL flowers are not enjoyable (uncomfortable)’ (although I had only minimal exposure with a certain set of flowers); the person believes that there is no better solution other than what he or she has already found and is adamantly (fearfully) announcing it and denying the existence of what could be true.

So “truth” for a fearful person is a fragment of a partial truth that they are adopting as the complete truth. This type of partial thinking and judgment thinking uses premature and subjective (emotional) reasoning and is not complete (in the standard of Truth) in its evaluation. Let’s take the topic of guns: If in my background all I see on TV are about guns killing people and bad guys having guns and then my cousin was shot accidentally with a gun and died, and if I was a fearful person, I would be against guns and anything having to do with guns and would only search for truths that support my fears (my belief system) on guns -- even though there are more truths that exist on the matter of guns and people with guns. If I was a fearless person, I would examine all those truths prior to making a decision as to whether to be a gun owner (supporter) or not.

Religion is another example: If I was a fearful person and my experience was bad (uncomfortable) and if I was indoctrinated in a church (based more of fear) that told me that I was worthless, sinful, and going to hell unless I handled alligators and only God can talk to me through the of handling of alligators. Some of the (fear-based) statements about religion that I might make when I grow up might be, “Religion is a pile of crap and I consider myself spiritual and don’t want to be in any religious organization” (partial thinking). Or I might say, “Churches are full of hypocrites and I was beaten until I handled alligators so I don’t believe in God at all” (adverse/reverse thinking). Or I say, “Religion is only real and true if alligators are involved” (judgment thinking). Or I say, “God is an alligator” (assumptive thinking). This list of statements (opinions – partial thinking) can go on and on. So when I do grow up, and I find that there is evidence (a mass consensus of information) that many more truths exist on the matter of God, I can choose to examine more experiences - or I can simply deny experimentation, make statements (not questions), and not allow for a complete range of measurement.

Let’s take another example: If I was a fearful person and my experience was good (comfortable) with religion as a child and I see my partial truth as a whole truth, my fears (of losing who I think I am) will choose to prove that something does exist that may not exist. If I “ illusion” any other “illusion of religion” that is a more important religion, I will deny investigating other religions for “fear of losing” the religion that I hold dear. I might even consider all other religions bad except for mine. And if I think my religion was good (comfortable), I might think that particular religion is the only one that is good. There is evidence that more truths exist in this matter but I will be denying the experimentation – I do not allow a complete range of measurement (full complete testing). If I was born into a religion that did not require me to do the commandments and if I find a religion that does require me doing the commandments, my converting to that religion might make me feel like I will lose something -- my "freedom", my childhood, closeness with my family, etc. So the fear of loss will prevent me from having more experiences and I will stay enclosed in my illusion of moreness. In other words, I reinforce the positive in my own religion while denying the positive in any other religion.

If I was a fearful person and my experience was bad (uncomfortable) with religion in general as a child and I flatly see my partial truth as the whole truth, I might choose to prove that something that may exist does not exist. I might choose to ignore this mass collection of information of the consensus from others that does exist. I could deem any consensus as stupid and not a reality, but a programming. I might choose to look for information of consensus of others that does exist that deem any religion as stupid and not a reality and only unintelligent people are attracted to any notions of God. I might feel the need to prove or force something to not exist – to create denial or hatred of others (that choose the opposite of what the subject chooses to believe) in order to make myself feel like I exist. I have the (negative) beliefs that the more other things don’t exist – the more I do exist. The smaller I make others – the larger I feel I become. People that have a fear of loss will lack the experience to measure or desire to measure honestly. They’ve been only given a specific environment to work with and they choose to have limited options and to limit other people’s options.

Being fearless is the allowance of a range of measurement (testing fully), the asking of questions and comparatively analyzing all the answers to other measurements, requiring more information with the whole mind being open; the willingness to allow the mind to be in an experience to allow the body to reverberate the electro-chemical impulses to see how the muscles twist – positive or negative, and not denying or ignoring the results – this is Fearlessness. Fearless people feel the need to not disprove or deny – but to prove and try with faith to prove what others (as a mass consensus) might be experiencing with an unbiased mind. They ask questions and compare the patterns. They have the positive beliefs that the more other things do exist, the more they do exist as well. The bigger they make others – the more they add to themselves. They have a faith that the more experiences they measure, the closer they are can arrive at an answer to things that are true.

~ Missy 4-27-2011
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; Since I don't drink cow's milk often, it's a tasty alternative. Commercial almond milk that you buy at the stores have an ingredient list that is a paragraph long containing all kinds of stuff like carrageenan. The only almond milk that I have found not containing carrageenan is Almond Dream and although I love it -- it's expensive to me. I can buy a pound of almonds for $4 - $5 and get a few half-gallons of almond milk. Typically, a half-gallon container of commercial almond milk runs $2 - $5. Fresh almond milk is easy to make and I know what I actually put in it and it's cost effective. It's considered a raw healthy food as well.

What you will need:
* blender, glass bowl, paint strainer bag, large bowl, pitcher, and tastebuds!

* 1 cup raw almonds (soaked)
* water for soaking nuts
* 5-6 cups water (to taste)
* 1/2 tsp vanilla (optional)
* 3-5 pitted dates or other sweetener to taste - stevia, agave nectar, etc. (optional)

Soak Almonds: Place one cup of raw almonds in a container with water completely covering the almonds. If any almonds float up - remove. Cover with towel and place in a cool area (like refrigerator).

Reasons for soaking nuts: To make soft to blend; more palatable taste; removal of dust, residue & tannins; greater increased enzyme activity for better absorption for food nutrient and increased digestibility.

Soak nuts in glass container anywhere from 20 minutes to 6 hours - even overnight in the refrigerator. I prefer soaking for a longer period of time (6 hours to overnight) since it makes blending easier. Also, soaking nuts in plastic is not recommended since plastic can leach into the water and into your food. Many raw food preparers keep nuts soaked in the fridge to have handy and if you do this, keep the water fresh and change it often so the food does not spoil.

After the almonds are soaked well and plump, rinse the soaked almonds with clean water and put the almonds into the blender with 5 - 6 cups of water (depending on your taste). Some people use 8. I prefer 6.

Blend almonds and water until smooth. It should look milky white.

Pour the mixture into through the paint-strainer bag (sprout bag, nut bag, strainer, cheesecloth, etc) over a big bowl. The grinds get very small so often a regular strainer is not good enough to make almond milk be very smooth. Squeeze the pulp thoroughly to extract as much milk.

(You can also save the almond milk pulp, dry, and make almond flour for cookies, pancakes, cracker recipes that require almonds. You can save the pulp in a plastic baggie and freeze).

You can leave the milk alone (in case you might want other potential uses) or place milk back into the blender and add 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla and 3 - 5 pitted dates (or other sweetener) until smooth. (For a variation, try blending in a banana or use a little nutmeg).

You can restrain just to make sure that all particles are out of the milk if you are very picky about it being milky smooth.

Now place in a pitcher and put it in the fridge. The milk should should be used within a week Always shake well before using since it does settle.

TIP #1.
Many almond milk recipes call for a "sprout bag" or "nut bag". I feel that they are way too expensive and more of a marketing ploy. You can go to a hardware store and get a paint-strainer bag for about $1.99 for 2 bags. I would recommend the 2 gallon size. It's a nylon mesh and there is no evidence (I've checked all the FDA sites) that straining almonds or various nuts through a nylon mesh is in any way a health hazard. It's just a tip.

TIP #2.
Take you almond pulp, dehydrate (dry @140 degrees in oven), grind, make flour, store in freezer. Recipes that use almond flour (http://www.elanaspantry.com/almond-flour-recipes/)

TIP #3.
You can use your almond pulp to make a dip. Try This Almond Dip.

3 cup Almond pulp (almond meal left over from making almond milk)
fresh juice of 1 medium size lemon
3 cloves of garlic mashed
fresh chopped parsley
Olive oil to good consistency
Spices of your choice
little salt & little pepper

Process & blend.

TIP #4.
It's delicious hot. Add some date paste and have a hot, creamy drink!

OTHER IDEAS:

Some people want to remove the outer layer of the almond. It's very easy to do when it has been soaked. I don't really mind it at all and it's additional fiber. But some people feel that the outer layer makes the almond milk seem more bitter. Also, they like the appearance of the milk to look whiter.

Enjoy!!

Airport Security Stopped Me and Searched My Bag.

Well, it's been a while since I have written on my blog. HOW DO PEOPLE DO IT!? How do they write on their blog daily? Anyway, I have completed probably 4 or 5 videos since I last wrote on my blog. And I am still working on making videos with Moving Action shots. Go to http://youtube.com/missiana69 to see the rest of my videos.

Anyway, this little video is something that I completed about my last airport experience. I found it interesting. I DO appreciate that the TSA are doing a thorough job. I am grateful that security guards take the time to seek, search, and do what they do. I just found my experience rather odd so I just wanted to share it with others.

I created this video through xtranormal since I wasn't sure how to go about creating the dialogue that occurred but wanted to somehow document my experience. I was stopped when I was going through airport security. I hope that it might be informative as well. This is a true story with little embellishment. Enjoy!

My 3rd Video Effort: Iron Sonix (song by Darren Stroud for Iron Man)

This is my 3rd effort on learning how to edit videos while also creating a story for FreaknMissy's guitarist - Darren Stroud. I selected the song "IRON SONIX" off of Darren's CD titled "Guitar Absolute". I knew how much Darren loves superheroes like Iron Man and his musicianship and guitar skills are reminiscent of the quality of craftsmanship of superheros, I decided to use Iron Man ideas and felt that it would be appropriate for this song.

Darren performs all guitars, basses, tracks and the Cd is also produced, recorded, and mastered by him. The drummer is Adam Farley. This song "Iron Sonix" (among many others) is available on iTunes - http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/guitar-absolute/id304470830

This video is radically different from my 1st & 2nd efforts on video editing. But I think it's because the musical style and energy is so animated and different. I also produced special pictures that I designed for Darren along with great shots from the movie and various Iron Man video games. You can see the credit list below the video.

I want to be sure to thank and credit everyone involved in order for me to use these images to create this movie - but I wasn't sure How to go about it officially. I do know that many images are common and to find the exact location of the original can be difficult. But I know that if someone used one of my images, it would be nice to be included along with that page. So many people just pick and choose images without giving a location as to where they got them. I couldn't roll credits on the actual video itself ... so I have decided to list this CREDIT LIST on my blog as well as my youtube site: http://youtube.com/missiana69

THANK YOU ALL!

C R E D I T S: I read up a little more on how to edit with the program I am using (iMovie '08) and I learned about transitions, smash cuts, and dissolves. This video is a broad brush stroke of my life story set to one of my introspective songs that I wrote called "That's Where I Am". The song is actually about moving forward and onward and it's rather an autobiography of sorts. I sing and play the piano and it was also recorded by me inside my small apartment in Hollywood. I used a Radioshack microphone with an on-off switch that went direct into a Tascam 4-track. This performance is live with no production edits and additional exterior noises are provided by my surrounding apartment life. I am using photos of me and landscapes of Korea. I am playing the piano and singing. When I wrote this song, I aurally envisioned a bass solo in the song so I invited upright bassist (Chris MacMahon) and drummer (Kenny Phelps) to play with me and read my charts. We are performing this "Live" together in a studio. The song is about "love & loss", but really more about moving forward and just knowing that the person you "let go" is still out there and that is a good positive feeling. I am just using photos of my face and practicing on how to place pictures into my video. It's a bit jerky in places, but I purposely did that thinking that was what I was suppose to do ... try to match the melody with the scene changes. (If you see my 2nd video effort, you will see my improvements over a period of 24 hours. I am now trying to remove myself from matching the melody identically with the changes in the melody of the music).

My Quest with Ralphs Grocery Store

I love that I have a Ralphs Grocery Store close to me that is open for 24 hours. I love that I can get my quarters there for laundry. I can pretty much get anything I want at any given time. If I wanted to buy black shoe polish at 3:00AM after a long gig where I rocked my leather boots off, I can count on Ralphs.

American people truly shop like Kings. If you have never been to a third-world country market (grocery), you would not understand the depth of how “rich” the American grocery stores like Ralphs is.

However, in saying all this about my appreciation of the luxuries in America, there is something to be said about what America was founded on …Trust. Trust is the soil that all transactions grow from; Honesty is the bedrock that supports that relationship. It is strongly intertwined. It is the beginning of all transactions (relationships) … be it personal matters to business.

Ralphs started with one dude, George A. Ralphs -- one person creating trust with his environment and his fellow man to provide a service … a cornerstone for the community.

Ralphs is now one of the larger subsidiaries of Kroger. According to the Kroger’s website, Kroger chains include: Kroger Food and Drug · Ralphs · King Soopers & City Market · Dillons · Smith's Food and Drug · Fry's Food and Drug · Quality Food Centers · Baker's · Owen's Market · JayC Food Stores · Hilander · Gerbes · Pay Less Food Markets · Scott's Food & Pharmacy · Kroger Fresh Fare · Food 4 Less · Foods Co. · Fred Meyer · Fred Meyer Jewelers · Littman Jeweler’s · Barclay Jewelers · Fox’s Jewelers · Kroger Personal Finance · The Little Clinic.

Logo from Kroger logos page at thekrogerco.com

Wow. These guys own freakin’ everything.
And as you can see from Kroger’s logo, their core values are Honesty, Respect, Inclusion, Diversity, Safety, and Integrity.

When an item is marked on the shelf as one price and it rings up as another … it’s a mistake. I trust to be taken care of as the customer. Ralphs has a Scan Right Policy when this occurs. If the receipt does not match the shelf tag, the customer gets that item for FREE. Yes. Free.

Whenever I have shop at Ralphs Grocery Stores, I have had issue after issue with Ralphs not giving me the price of the item that is stated on the shelf and overcharging me. And if you are a frugal shopper and someone that often is aware of the “sales items of the week”, this is where a lot of discrepancies occur.

It can be a scanning error or warehouse/stocking mistake, but some consumer advocates like Mary Bach calls it “electronic shoplifting”. It's as if Ralphs and other stores are literally “shoplifting” the money out of our pockets.

I check my receipts all the time. I get overcharged on items nearly 70% of my visits. I have been undercharged once and I told them about it and they didn't seem to care just as much as they don't care when I am overcharged. The thing is that when Ralphs undercharges and the error is in favor of the customer, it is Ralphs fault ... they “cheated” themselves -- just as much as it is their fault when they overcharge and “cheat” the customer. And when they overcharge the customer, they have a policy. They don’t have a policy about undercharging because that is their mistake. I am not required to “help” Ralphs, but when I tried to help Ralphs about my one undercharge experience, the lack of care about the procedures goes across the board whether it's for or against the customer.

My visits at Ralphs are often an event. I have had witness after witness on this -- especially my roommates Michael and Darren. And it can become unpleasant when you have to “work” to make things fair. It’s Not about the money -- it’s about honesty and following through with their policy about overcharging the customer. I politely hold them accountable for it and they adamantly make an embarrassing situation out of it rather than treating me with respect and saying that it was an honest mistake on their part.

These stores rely on customers to NOT make an issue over a few cents and dollars.

I was with my friend, Molly, when she wanted to go to Ralphs for a few jugs of water and protein bars after our hike. The amount seemed unusually high, and when I checked her receipt, she had been overcharged. I told her that she was overcharged. She was too embarrassed to try to do anything about it. I told her that we should make them accountable and that she deserves to get the items for what was stated on the shelf. She asked me to handle it while she waited.

Missy & Molly. (photo: Sandra C. Esparza)

Well, I politely did. They checked the shelf-price on the items in question and then tried to give me back the difference of the overcharge. I told them about their policy and they reluctantly, without much word or a look, gave me the overcharge items for free and also paid me $18+ dollars that she had overpaid.

When I went into the car to give Molly the items and the money she received for their “mistake”, she was floored. She couldn’t believe that they had overcharged her that much – and that was just for a few items. She said that she never checks her receipts in the store. But she also said that when she does see an error, she just lets it go because it’s too much trouble to deal with. She wasn’t even aware of the policy.

These are the types of people that Ralphs relies on to shop there because it does take work to keep big business accountable and to keep people representing that business accountable. If we all did this, we would all benefit, but it takes too much work apparently. And if you are polite and don’t want to cause a “problem” for what appears to be a few dollars or cents, or if you are embarrassed to make others wait even when you see a mistake of an overcharge – you are just allowing this behavior to continue.

We are letting “the Man” win. We are just letting the man reach into our pockets over and over again. Big business is so use to this sheep-like behavior that if someone does speak up and say something, the Big Guy can try to make the small guy feel like the “bad guy” while they are reluctantly handing over the money that they overcharged the little guy with. And the other sheep in line start bleating and bad-mouthing because someone is trying to do things correctly … not quietly. Even the cashier is a sheep and can get annoyed or personally offended when someone catches an error as if it’s his or her own store. It’s Ralphs. It’s not your store. All these sheep are enough incentive to make a potential watchdog-style person turn their eye and just not say anything. I suppose that I am a watchdog in the making.

Then there are some people that won’t stand for it and they go to the opposite extreme. Mary Bach who is named the “scanner-lady” has filed numerous small claims suits against retailers for “electronic shoplifting” where she is overcharged for products. Most plead no-contest since they have violated a consumer-protection law and they pay her monies plus court fees. This has happened repeatedly.

Or you have the other extreme. Someone that knows this policy and uses it against the store’s consistent mistakes -- going from store to store to receive all kinds of free items. Alana Lipkin of Framingham, Mass., has spent more than a decade taking advantage of store policies that give you groceries free if they ring up incorrectly.

"In a single shopping trip, the largest dollar amount was over $1000," she said.

THAT is an example of how many scanner mistakes are out there in a single day.

People buy tons and tons of groceries. Imagine the number of people that don’t check their receipts and when one store overcharges multiple times during just one day over a variety of items in that store; now multiply that by the amount of stores in the USA and in most stores they stock hundreds of thousands of items, and there are hundreds of thousands of people going through the stores and buying groceries … can you see the magnitude of money that they pull from the consumer’s wallets? The amount would be staggering.

If little ole me is finding around 70% of my transactions where I am overcharged and if there are more than thousands of stores in the USA and in most stores, they stock hundreds of thousands of items and hundreds of thousands of people are going through these stores… can you see the enormity of the issue … of all those small overcharged amounts adding up?

Well, some people have noticed. And some people have taken action. Ralphs has been sued a number of times and they have been penalized for overcharging their customers. Some of the headlines read, “Supermarket Scanner Errors Can Cost Consumers Up to $2.5 Billion Each Year. Some Grocery Stores Charge Tax on Non-Taxable Items” (ABC News), “Ralphs accused of overcharging customers, false advertising” (Los Angeles Times), “Valley Ralphs charged with overcharging” (The Daily News), “More Misdemeanor Counts for Ralphs in Overcharging Case” (Laist)… and the list goes on and on.

Some notice and don’t care. They would even say a blog about Ralphs Overcharging is as old as the hills and it’s just “tired news” since it’s been going on for years and years.

With higher and higher consumption of all things being pushed and pulled by government policies, corporate policies, marketing & promotional tactics, and sales; where technology is advanced enough to enable the consumer instant gratification; where there is a range of acceptable behaviors and taking care of one’s own self interest is a higher value then to protect the rights of others in order to protect oneself … Honesty seems like a lost artifact that belongs in another time and place.

My journey with Ralphs is continuous. How can I blame the store only? It’s not a one-sided relationship. Many customers allow this behavior to continue. This store is responsible for thousands of items and price changing item after item every week. And if someone is not doing their job correctly and mistakes happen, I do understand.

It’s the proper reaction and interaction that I am on a quest for – a visit when an overcharge occurs and everyone reacts and interacts well. So I plod along on my steadfast course.

And Yes, I’ve lost my Ralphs Rewards points when they implemented a new program and past points expired. Yes, I’ve watched while I would be with the cashier and another clerk would change the sign right before our eyes to a higher price only to have the cashier tell me that I now have to pay the higher price. Yes, I’ve been overcharged for bulk coffee when they were in a legal battle about their inaccurate weights & measurements overpricing issue. Yes, I have watched them tell me that they would gladly give me the difference, but I don’t get the item free. Yes, I’ve had them tell me that they can’t double my manufacturer’s coupon since the scanner won’t double it. Yes, I’ve had to watch myself bring to their attention a pricing error only to watch them do nothing to change the shelf tag. Yes, I’ve had to listen to myself use a firm voice and point to their policy sign and ask for my item for free. Yes, I’ve had to watch others watching me with scrutiny and some with disdain. Yes, I’ve heard the guffaws and moans from customers having to wait for things to be made fair. Yes, I’ve heard them say things like …“Asian people …” blah blah blah. The list goes on and on.

My journey itself is an acceptance of this situation with Ralphs and all of us that gather there. There MIGHT one day be a visit when all things will fall into place when an overcharge happens -- when the concept of Truth and Honesty will be perfectly matched in that moment like the clasp of a firm handshake. That moment will be my small pot of gold in my rainbow of shopping experiences with Ralphs Grocery Store.

Missy's Rainbow.

IDEAS TO PREVENT OVERCHARGE:
-be certain you have the correct sale item that matches shelf price
-watch at the checkout as items are scanned
-jot down shelf prices or snap a cell phone picture of them
-use the self-checkout so you can watch the prices scan
-pay cash
-review your receipt in store or before you leave the store parking lot

TO FILE A COMPLAINT ABOUT A SERVICE: Hit the button.

EMPLOYEE STORY on CONSUMER AFFAIRS:
James of La Habra CA (06/20/08)
Ralphs operates two reward programs which promises their club card members money off their future purchases if they purchase a required dollar amount of either pet items or wine in 750 ml. bottles. It's 100 in pet items and 200 in wine and in return the customer will save 9 off their next 9 purchase of pet items or 10 off their next 10 purchase of wine. They use the customers loyalty card to track the customers purchases and automatically issue a savings certificate to the customers loyalty card number. Every time the customer meets the requirements another certificate is issued and so on and so on.

Here's the catch, the company will never automatically redeem the certificates and they fail to tell the customers how to properly redeem the certificates. Ralphs puts an expiration date of less than a month on these certificates which is not true. Every certificate issued has the same number assigned to it and the program is an ongoing program which doesn't expire.

On the certificate it states that the customer must purchase at least 9 in pet items or 10 in wine 750 ml. bottles and that they must use their club card in order to redeem the certificate. Once the customer has fulfilled the requirements the company fails to take the 9 or 10 off their order. One of my customers had accumulated 36 9 certificates and saved 324 off his order. He received 267 in cash back and the register for that day balanced. The company also has taken my money which I have earned towards my certificate. Every time I have shopped my pet rewards total starts at zero, meaning I will never get a certificate even after spending hundreds of dollars on pet items.

The company profits off every certificate which is not redeemed and is able to write off every certificate which is issued. Customers who do not speak English will never get their rewards in the form of money off their order.

The company also uses this program to terminate employees who assist customers in redeeming their outstanding rewards. I worked for the company for over 22 years and was terminated for helping my customers and for being honest with them. I know of another employee who also worked with ralphs for over 22 years and was terminated also. We were both managers and had been doing this for years and never warned to stop. The union does little to help these employees and helps the company in terminating them. I was told that in one month I returned to the customer 5,000 in rewards. Ralphs has 400 stores and a minimum of 6 cashiers at each store. Some stores have as many as 20 cashiers and if every cashier did what I did, I figure there would be over 20 million in rewards given to the customers.

NEW STORY: “Valley Ralphs charged with overcharging”
CRIME: Supermarket faces $256,000 in fines, accused of shorting shoppers.
By: Greg Risling, The Associated Press
Posted: 05/11/2010 10:42:55 PM PDT

The City Attorney's Office filed criminal charges Tuesday against the Ralphs supermarket chain and its parent company, Kroger Co., accusing them of overcharging for some goods in Los Angeles.

The city attorney filed 14 counts of false and misleading advertising along with other charges, including false labeling and unlawful computation of value. Both Ralphs and Cincinnati-based Kroger face fines and penalties of up to $256,000.

Eight of the 14 stores were in the San Fernando Valley, including sites in Canoga Park, Encino, Van Nuys, Sherman Oaks, Woodland Hills, Studio City and two in Granada Hills.

"We take allegations of this nature very seriously and we'll conduct our own investigation and take corrective actions as necessary," said Meghan Glynn, a spokeswoman for Ralphs and Kroger.

Undercover inspectors visited 14 Ralphs stores across Los Angeles between January and March and found customers were being gouged for prepackaged and weighed products including fried chicken and salad, city prosecutors said.

Inspectors from the county's Department of Weights and Measures discovered 27 violations. Most of the violations involved the store illegally charging for the weight of the package, or including the ice glaze on frozen products in the net weight, authorities said. Some prepackaged items also were found to be under the weight on the label.

Ralphs was cited for similar violations in 2008 and 2009 and paid nearly $17,000 in fines.

The locations of the Ralphs stores involved in the charges are:
At 3410 W. Third St., Los Angeles; 22333 Sherman Way, Canoga Park; 16940 Devonshire St., Granada Hills; 18101 Chatsworth St., Granada Hills; 5601 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles; 16325 Ventura Blvd., Encino; 260 S. La Brea Ave., Los Angeles; 14440 Burbank Blvd., Van Nuys; 11727 Olympic Blvd., Los Angeles; 14049 Ventura Blvd., Sherman Oaks; 21909 Ventura Blvd., Woodland Hills; 1050 N. Western Ave., San Pedro; 10701 Ventura Blvd., Studio City; 3300 W. Slauson Ave., Los Angeles.

PARTIAL HISTORY OF RALPHS according to WIKIPEDIA:
Ralphs Grocery Company is a major supermarket chain in the Southern California area and the largest subsidiary of Cincinnati-based Kroger. It is the oldest such chain west of the Mississippi River. Ralphs Grocery Company also operates stores under the Cala Foods, Bell Markets, Food-4-Less, and FoodsCo names in California as well as PriceRite stores in Nevada, now operated as Food-4-Less.

Ralphs Grocery Company was founded in 1873 in Downtown Los Angeles by George A. Ralphs (1850–1914). The original store was located at Sixth and Spring Streets. In the 20th century, Ralphs became a grocery pioneer, offering self-service markets with checkout stands in distributed locations. The company employed notable architects in designing its stores, and the former Ralphs Grocery Store built in 1929 in Westwood Village has been photographed by Ansel Adams, declared a Historic Cultural Monument and listed in the National Register of Historic Places. In the 1980s it created a chain of hybrid supermarket/warehouse stores called The Giant (unrelated to Northeastern chain Giant Food) which failed, but the concept returned with the company's merger with the Food 4 Less discount chain. During the mid-1990s, Ralphs expanded as it merged with many Southern California supermarkets including The Boys, Alpha Beta, Viva, and ABC Markets. Ralphs Grocery Company merged with Fred Meyer, Inc., in 1997. In October 1998, Fred Meyer, Inc., parent company of Ralphs, merged with The Kroger Company. The company slogan is "Fresh Food...Lower Prices."

In 1999, Ralphs purchased about 30 Albertsons and Lucky Stores, mostly in northern California. The stores were divested as a result of the Albertsons and American Stores merger. Ralphs operated the stores until January 2006, when they announced that all but one Ralphs in northern California would close. In August 2006, the one remaining Ralphs in northern California was given a 60 day notice of closure. Also in August 2006, Ralphs finalized plans to sell 11 (of 13 remaining) Cala-Bell Stores to Harley DeLano, who previously ran the chain. Ralphs expansion into northern California did not work out.

Ralphs opened a new 50,000-square-foot (4,600 m2) store in the South Park neighborhood of Downtown Los Angeles on July 20, 2007 which is located on 9th and Hope St. W/validated parking. This marked the return of the first full-run supermarket in Downtown in 50 years. Ralphs closed a store that had been located at 7th Street and Figueroa in 1950.

Nice Site about My Ralphs: myralphsshermanoaks.com

100% Coffee Lover is now 100% Coffee-Free

p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal { margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; and just how good coffee felt going down my throat when I drank it. I loved how coffee was my constant cup-to-go companion as I was getting 1001 things done in a day.

So how do I keep up with a world that is so over-stimulated and mega-saturated with hot coffees, cold coffees, energy drinks, caffeine drinks, sodas, stimulants, and drugs – when I don’t drink or use any of these things? How can I keep up with the competition of getting things done … of accomplishing all of my “hopes & dreams” for the day … for the hour … for the night … for the year … getting in as much work and time management … squeezing out every last drop of sweat & energy -- all without coffee?

It’s as if I say I am going to be a bodybuilder but not utilize anything that ALL the other pro bodybuilders do to get to that contest-level. It’s like pro bodybuilders using steroids or other supplements for growth, and I’m pulling the All-Natural card to be a pro bodybuilder on their level. And I’m not even talking about using Natural HGH to be in contest form. I’m just talking about hard work, sweat, blood, disciplined diet with perfect nutritional timing, plenty of sleep – all without the aid of any HGH to be a body-builder. Or it’s like being an organic artistic photographer that uses their eye, light, subject, equipment, and darkroom to create the perfect photo - and not using any Photoshop or digital format and trying to compete with other photographers out there in the world that do. Or maybe it’s like being a film star and not getting any physical enhancements or taking diet pills. How can one do it? If you want to be a main player in any competitive field, it’s like you are almost forced to have to play the level of the field and utilize what others are using to upgrade the game.

So if the world goes a certain direction, a certain tempo, a certain attitude … am I expected to just do like everyone else if I want to be in the competitive field of the world in order to just keep up with all the “spinning”?

Yes … IF you are THAT ambitious.

No … IF you are like me.

I say NOPE to DOPE.

And I just mean “doping” myself in whatever way just to keep up with all these other peeps that work their butts off getting their band reviewed, shows booked, writing songs all hours of the night into the early morning, searching for their road to rock stardom. Or people building their bodies to perfection far beyond anything that I could ever attain.

Okay. So instead of getting 1001 things done in a day, I get 888 things done a day. And one of those things is sleeping a little more. And I’ve never wanted that to be one of the things I get done. I always felt that I will sleep when I am resting in my grave. But I am a living human being and I do have to shut the body down sometimes to regenerate.

I know in my heart there will come a day when these stimulants or meds won’t be available and when people (that use them) can not get it when they want it or need it at that moment, at that hour, at that day … there will be a crash & burn.

I want to work hard to curb all of my habits … things that might have a hint of addiction. I want to be able to burn slow, strong, and resilient – a constant brightness. I want to reach deep and create my own energy and dig deeper to shine brighter. I want my thoughts calm and emotions steady and not be bombarded with a billion thoughts all at once about things to learn, to do, to say, to complete. I don't want my brain to function like a search engine. It’s like trying to use Google now. I start writing the thing I am interested in and it starts writing for me all these other ideas I could be looking at. I want to stay focused in the thing that I am searching for and not just start going off into googling noodling la-la land.

And yes, I CAN get restless because I can’t accomplish everything that I want to. I have to stop and regenerate. And I CAN feel like I have a million things I want to learn and study and finish … but I have to stop and breathe.

So, I have made my lifestyle choice. I will not be drinking coffee. My cup-to-go and I had a great run together, but it’s just a “Taste”. I wasn't born with a cup of coffee in my hand. I never had coffee until I came to the USA. It's acquired. And with so much out there in life, I don’t want to be led by "A Taste”. I am the leader of my palate. I am also the leader of my palette. I pick my colors.
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; The increments increase by 4 ounces at a time. It's perfect for mixing my protein drinks after a good workout. And then for calculating my water intake for the day.

I know that people utilize the jars for all kinds of uses (containers for leftover foods, oils, coins, detergents, paintbrushes, etc.), but I don't mix the glass ware like that. My mason jar drink-ware is just for drinking cold drinks. I don't keep nails & screws in them on one day and then turn around and clean it out and drink out of it. Also, the metal lids maintained on the glass will mix with whatever is in the container (e.g. olive oil) ... if it touches the lid.

So I carefully keep an eye on the metal lids. I wash the lids every time they are used (when I vigorously shake my protein drink) and make sure they are dried well each time. Some lids are not made as well as others and when rust keeps reoccurring, I pitch it right away.

Survivalists: These jars are not recommended for home canning (in case you are interested for food storage ideas) because the glass is a lighter weight than the usual Mason Jars and that makes it unsafe for home canning. However, they are more durable than the typical store-bought glassware. And my small hands can still handle these man-hand size jars. I love the way they feel. I love the way they clean. It's reminiscent of "country folk" drinking moonshine out by their small-time distillery in the Appalachian hills somewhere under the light of the moon ... sitting on a stump.

So as I grasp my "simple yet wonderful" mason jar while standing in the middle of the kitchen, I take a big gulp of my delicious whey protein drink after one gratifying kick-butt workout and I think to myself ...
For instance, the H1N1 swine flu that was going around a while back. I don't know if the media was blowing things out of proportion, but people seemed to show so much fear of loss. There was so much talk of social distancing.

If people think that flu was bad, they won't know what the heck is going on when some recombinant flu (H5N1 mixed with H1N1) creates some mega super-flu that travels person to person and is more than 50% fatal. The swine flu was just a few % of fatality. It's hard to imagine how crazy everyone might become if some outbreak of small pox occurs. It's like I am watching a bad movie building scenes right before my eyes as I study, read, and observe the world.

I think of these times as Opportunities.

I DID catch the swine flu and it was arduous - but not too painful. It started with a really major headache (and I NEVER get headaches). The virus mutates in the body so it lasted over 3 months. On three occasions I thought I was healthy and well, but became symptomatic all over again. I never went to the doctor. I just recovered and let the viruses do its thing in my body. I felt lucky to catch the swine flu because I wanted the opportunity to build these particular antibodies in case it does mix with other viruses. I wanted to be stronger. I love challenging the body -- whether I am working out or working on the immune system.

I think people just freak out in circumstances like this because they don't live each day like they are going to die tomorrow. If each of us lived every day like this, we would probably do everything much more committed and consider all the choices we make more fully every minute. We would seize each moment as opportunities. We would be able to see what is before us more clearly and appreciate every breath we take more deeply. And love each other more truly.

I just wish for others a vision that is more bright and not so full of fear. I want others to be at peace. I want people to not feel so disturbed. It saddens me that they might be sad or scared. There's not anything I can do about it. I can only "be" by example.

Swine Flu? What swine flu?

Next Door Neighbor

Picnic Time with Missy.

I think that I am beginning to find my kind. I created my first You Tube video on my first aid kit, created a channel, and subscribed to all these survivalist-type of people. I also joined a gun club and I'm taking archery. Here's an interesting story from someone from my gun group.

A LETTER TO A FRIEND:
My neighbor is a lefty of sorts (Obama bumper stickers, gung-ho socialized medicine, guns should be banned, etc.). So this past spring, I put this sign up in my yard after one of his anti-gun rants at a neighborhood cocktail party.

The sign wasn't up more than an hour before he called the police and wanted them to make me take down the sign. Fortunately, the officer politely informed him that it was not their job to take such action without a court order and that he had to file a complaint downtown; first, which would be reviewed by the city attorney to see if it violated any city, county, or state ordinances, which if there was a violation a court order would be sent to the offending party (me) to & remove the sign in seven days. After several weeks he was informed that the sign was legal (by a quarter of an inch) and there was nothing the city could do, which obviously made him madder.

I tried to smooth things over by inviting him to go shooting with me and my friends at the hunt club but that seemed to make him even more angry. I then asked him if he wanted to go to a rally but again he declined my outreach efforts to bring about a better understanding between political and social opponents. I am at a loss how to reconcile our long relationship (notice I did not say friendship).

Maybe I'll ask him if he want to go deer hunting, which opens up November 1st, you know, just a bunch of guys running through the woods chasing Bambi, then sitting around the campfire roasting marshmallows, drinking beer, and singing our favorite country songs to the accompaniment of Jake's harmonica (he is a better lawyer than a harmonica player but don't tell him I told you). Anyway, how are things in your neck of the woods?

<a href="http://i288.photobucket.com/albums/ll161/missyindust/NextDoorNeighborBanGuns.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; (photo:Darren Stroud)

I started piano when I was 3. My background is classical. I dropped out of music college in the first semester relinquishing my full music scholarship.

I formed a band and traveled the US playing music full-time (we played my originals). I have performed in lots of venues; been featured on the news & TV; hosted as a VJ on TV; DJayed a radio program for original music.

That's Darren...the one holding up the guitar :)

I have had mentions in newspapers, magazines, books, webzines, music ads. I launched a music publishing company.

It was rather surreal because music was never really something that I had committed to do. It rather chose me. People were watching, listening, and giving me money to continue. I truly did not commit to music until I let go of my "first love" to choose the path of music. I embraced music only after that experience.

Missy's best asset is her mind, but others say it's her legs.

Highlights: I was a featured artist on SteveMadden.com (shoe creator for the likes of tori amos, josie & the pussycat movie, etc.) when he was featuring rockers at the time.

Click here to get a resume of performances

Missy does NOT have any tattoos.

Even while playing music full-time, I had little pop-culture knowledge. I was too busy making music to have any time to listen to music. While setting up my gear in a club, I heard "Hells Bells" and I discovered rock.

Every time I heard a song I liked, I would ask my new guitarist, Darren, "WHO'S THAT?" and he'd say something like, "Oh, that's Aerosmith".

I wanted to do more than drive one success-wheel in the Midwest. I wanted to express myself more aggressively. Rock 'n' Roll . . . and the raw energy of a live rock band was going to be my new vehicle. And I wanted to do it somewhere else -- NY, CA, London, etc. Wherever the road would take me. After turning down management and publishing deals in NY, I found myself in LA.

Hiking in Tujunja CA. (photo: Vickie Selezniov)

I moved out to LA with everything in my car. Darren (guitarist) followed in his truck. At our 1st gig in CA, we met our manager and mentor, Michael. We started my 2nd band - FreaknMissy.

Everyday I learn about current pop-culture or catch up with the past. I have often fallen in love with a band's sound only to discover that they are no longer a band.

Missy booked her first show before she knew how to play the bass.
She gave herself one month to learn to play bass.

People say that I am going backwards. As I get older, I progress towards more juvenile music. I still enjoy classical and complicated music but screw the pretense . . . I am a rocker.

It's hard to find the right people that have the same drive, ambition, vision, skill set, attitude, and philosophy like Michael, Darren, and I. But we're still moving forward. I've written a lot of great songs along the way. There are absolutely no losses.

Missy running @ Big Sur. (photo: Sandra C. Esparza)

I am working on my goals. I hope to do these things before the world ends as we know it.

1) Learn to fly - I don't care if I get an actual license, but if I achieve one, that is fine too.

2) Study study study - I don't care if I get a degree. I just want to study everything.

3) Learn to shoot well ... bullets, arrows, rocks, whatever.

4) Prepare my environment - proper food and water storage, earthquake proofing, BOBs, 3-day packs, earthquake packs, first aid kits, etc.

5) Become a better athlete, martial artist, and have an all-around higher physical performance; work on my endurance in extreme weather and temperatures.

6) Have a great rock band that makes quality music. Create a line of products from videos to music that people can have.

7) Work on channeling my anxiousness about the world into "working out" as much as possible. I am truly waiting and looking forward (with smiles, strength, and positivity) for the "world to end as we know it". I am here not only to SURVIVE, but hopefully, to survive it well.

Living is hard work. And at this moment, I love what I do, who I am, who I am becoming, the people I am with. I love this crazy path that we are all heading towards. I can't wait.

My obituary will never state "Missy died at 29" or "Missy died at 37" or "Missy died at 45" or "Missy died at 63" or "Missy died at 87".

I died at 17. I won't be growing any older.
